Anchorage summer wedding sunset times, June through August
4 min read ZION Entertainment
In Anchorage, the sun sets at about 11:40 pm in late June, around 11:15 pm in mid-July and just before 10 pm in mid-August, based on timeanddate.com’s 2027 tables. It does set every night. But from June 8 to July 4, 2027, the sky never gets darker than civil twilight, so a clear night stays light enough to see by until the sun comes back up.
That changes how you plan a reception.
What time does the sun set in Anchorage in the summer?
These are 2027 times in Alaska Daylight Time, from timeanddate.com’s June, July and August tables. The 2026 table for the same June dates is within a minute or two, so they’re safe to plan with.
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Civil twilight ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 1 | 4:36 am | 11:20 pm | 1:01 am |
| June 21 | 4:20 am | 11:42 pm | Lasts all night |
| July 1 | 4:27 am | 11:38 pm | Lasts all night |
| July 15 | 4:51 am | 11:17 pm | 12:52 am |
| August 1 | 5:32 am | 10:37 pm | 11:42 pm |
| August 15 | 6:08 am | 9:57 pm | 10:51 pm |
| August 31 | 6:49 am | 9:08 pm | 9:55 pm |
Sunset holds at 11:42 pm from June 21 through June 24, and timeanddate marks June 22 as the latest of the year. Then look at August. Sunset on August 31 comes almost an hour and a half earlier than on August 1, so a wedding on the last Saturday of August happens under a different sky than one on the first.
Does it get dark in Anchorage in the summer?
The sun goes down. People call it the midnight sun, but timeanddate describes a sun that never sets as something that happens inside the polar circles, and Anchorage’s table shows a sunset every single day.
What it doesn’t do near the solstice is get properly dark. Civil twilight is the stretch when the sun sits no more than 6 degrees below the horizon, and timeanddate notes that in clear weather you generally don’t need artificial light for most outdoor activities during it. In 2027, Anchorage stays in civil twilight all night from June 8 through July 4. Even on June 1, civil twilight ends at 1:01 am and starts again at 2:53 am.
So if you’re picturing a sparkler send-off against a black sky in late June, adjust the picture. You’ll get dusk at best.
When is golden hour for Anchorage wedding photos?
Golden hour has no official definition, but timeanddate puts it roughly where the sun is between 6 degrees above and 6 degrees below the horizon. It also says that in summer, near the polar circles, the sun can stay inside that band all night. For a June or early July wedding in Anchorage, that means your warm, low light shows up late in the evening and hangs around.
Check your photographer’s hours against the table. If coverage ends at 9 pm on June 21, you’ll miss sunset by two hours and 42 minutes. You can buy an hour at the end instead of the start, or schedule portraits after dinner and before the dancing peaks.
And tell your DJ when you’re stepping out. Twenty minutes of portraits is a good window for songs your friends will dance to without you watching.
When does dance floor lighting actually matter?
Later than you’d think. In June, maybe barely at all.
Decorative LEDs and blacklights need a darker room to do much, and blacklights especially wash out in daylight. In a tent or a hall with big windows, a reception on June 21 is still in daylight at 11:30 pm, so the lights read as decoration until very late. A windowless ballroom is the exception. There, lighting matters from the grand entrance on.
Mid-August is where it starts to pay off. On August 15, sunset is 9:57 pm and civil twilight ends at 10:51 pm, so a reception running to 11 gets a real dark stretch at the end. ZION’s wedding package includes decorative and dance-floor lighting: decorative LEDs and blacklights, no stage production. The later in August your date falls, the more those lights do.
How should you time the last dance?
The easiest move is to line the end of the night up with sunset.
On June 21, a 5:30 pm ceremony plus six hours of coverage takes you to 11:30 pm, twelve minutes before the 11:42 pm sunset. Do the last dance, then walk everybody outside. On August 15, a 4 pm ceremony puts the six-hour mark at 10 pm, three minutes after sunset.
Want the party to run past that? Extra time is $85 an hour, agreed in advance and subject to availability. Check your venue’s end time first, because a late sunset doesn’t extend a venue contract. Both packages are on the packages page if you’re comparing.
What about sound for an outdoor summer ceremony?
Long evenings make a 6 or 7 pm outdoor ceremony easy on the light. Sound is easier to forget. Outside, your officiant’s voice has no walls to bounce off, and the back rows can end up hearing more breeze than vows.
ZION’s ceremony setup is a microphone into a JBL PartyBox 310, and it’s included in the $750 package. JBL lists an 18-hour battery for that speaker, which is worth knowing if your ceremony spot is a long way from an outlet. Bring it up at the consultation either way. Settle where the officiant stands and which way the speaker faces, and ask for a quick mic check with the officiant before anyone takes a seat.
Holding a summer 2027 date? Check whether it’s open on the availability page, or call or text (907) 406-7211 with your ceremony time and venue, and you can map the six hours against the sunset in one conversation.
